Q: Do you have any other sized trays for the Film & Slide Digital Converter other than 35mm?
A: We are sorry to inform you that the slide and negative trays that we have included with the scanner are the only sizes we have. They are particularly sized only for 35mm slides and negatives. If you slides or negatives do not fit in to the provided trays, the slides or negatives that you have are most likely not 35mm.

Q: How come every time I plug the scanner in to the computer I get a USB not recognized message? I have all of the software loaded on to the computer.
A: Make sure that you are using 2.0 USB ports. To check if your computer is running on 2.0 USB ports, please follow these steps:

  1. Go to Control Panel.
  2. Look for System. (If you are in category view you will have to switch to classic view.)
  3. Open System.
  4. Look for the Hardware tab at the top of the window, click on Hardware.
  5. Click on Device Manager.
  6. Look for Universal Serial Bus Controllers.
  7. Expand that so that you are able to see the list of all the USB ports.

Look for anything that says either “enhanced”, or “USB 2”. If you see any of the mentioned words, this means that your computer has a 2.0 USB port. (See the picture below.)

This is most likely why you are getting the error message. If you do not have 2.0 USB ports, you would have to find out the make and model of your computer and purchase an add in card that will be compatible with your computer for USB 2.0. This should take care of the USB not recognized message.

Q:  I have loaded the software and the driver on to my computer but every time I push the “copy” button, nothing happens. What am I doing wrong?
A: First, make sure that you have all the necessary software downloaded on to your computer. Go to Control Panel and then go in to Add or Remove Programs. Make sure you have Arcsoft Photoimpressions 6 and OVT Scanner on your programs list. If you have both of those programs on your computer, close out of the Add or Remove Programs window. Then follow these steps:

  1. After you have loaded the driver and the software, you will have to plug the scanner in to your computer and then open up the Photoimpressions 6 icon from your desktop.
  2. Once that is open, you should be able to see “Get Photos” on the upper left hand corner.
  3. Click on that and you will select “Acquire from Scanner”.

Once you get the “Acquire from Scanner” window you will select “OVT scanner”

Then choose where you would like to save the pictures if you would not like them to automatically go in to your My Pictures folder. Click on the folder to the right to select which folder you would like the pictures to transfer to.

After you have selected where you would like your pictures to transfer to, select which film type you are going to be scanning. If you are scanning negatives, make sure you select 24 for the color depth and 1800 for the DPI. If not, your negatives will transfer as negatives and not positives.

  1. Now click on Acquire.
  2. Once you get the “OVT Scanner” window, you will put a slide or negative through. You will see it in the “Live View” window.
  3. Click on “Snapshot” or press the “Copy” button on the scanner. You will see the picture on the right side and on the top where it looks like a film strip.
  4. Then click on “Transfer” and the pictures will be transferred directly to your “My Pictures” folder or the folder which you designated.

Q: The scanner is only compatible with Windows XP. I am running Windows Vista. Should I try the driver on my computer anyway? Will it do any harm?
A: We are sorry to inform you that the Film & Slide Digital Converter is only compatible with Windows XP. We do not suggest loading the driver onto a computer that is running any operating system other than XP. As this may crash or damage your computer. If you do not have the required operating system, in this case Windows XP, please contact the retailer where it was purchased from to return.

Q: I’m doing everything correctly, I followed all of the steps to load the software and the driver. I get to the “Live View” and I am able to see the slide/negative that I put through. But every time I press the copy button on the scanner of the snapshot option on the screen, nothing happens. What should I do?
A: This may be a hardware issue. If possible, try using the scanner on a different computer to see if you achieve the same results. This is to determine if it is the software or hardware problem. If you find that it works on a different computer but not on your own, it may be that it is not compatible with your computer. If it is doing the same thing on a different computer, please contact the retailer where you purchased it from for an exchange, or email us at customerservice@vupointsolutions.com and let us know about the problem.

Q: I’m confused, when should I use the “Calibrate” function?
A: The calibrate function is used to adjust the automatic white balance and the automatic exposure of the scanner. You should calibrate right before you start scanning pictures to ensure the best white balance and exposure control.

Q: Why does it take such a long time for me to transfer my images to my computer? Is it normal to take about 4-5 minutes for each transferring process? Is there something wrong with my scanner?
A: The only thing that the scanner does is the snapshot part of the process. The transferring part depends on your computer. Make sure you disable you anti-virus program, this may make the transferring process a little quicker. Before you disable the anti-virus program, make sure to disconnect from the internet first. Also, this may be due to the amount of RAM that you have in your computer. You should have at least 1GB of RAM to have the program run as it is intended. To check this, you will have to open Control Panel, then System, and check under the general tab to see how much RAM your computer is running on.

Q: When I plug the scanner in to a USB port, the PWR light does not light up on the Film & Slide Digital Converter. The USB port on my computer is working. What am I doing wrong?
A: If this is happening, you may have a defective unit. There must be a short internally with the USB connection to your scanner. Please contact the retailer where you purchased the scanner from and see if they can exchange it for you. Or you can email us at customerservice@vupointsolutions.com to find out what we can do for you.

Q: Every time I turn off the computer and then turn it on it fails to boot and load. The computer just freezes up and I have to do a hard shut off of the computer by pressing the on/off button on the computer. I then have to unplug the scanner and then plug the scanner back in to have the computer load up completely and correctly and all the programs work fine. Why is this happening? Is it a software problem?
A: This is not a software problem. Make sure that when the scanner is not in use, detach it from your computer. This is because the scanner does not have an on of off button, so it is continually on while your computer is on and the scanner is plugged in. This may be why the scanner is freezing your computer. Make sure to unplug the scanner from your computer when it is not in use. Only plug the scanner in to the computer when your computer is fully booted up and you are ready to scan.

Q: I am trying to scan negatives and the finished product keeps coming out as a negative. I thought the whole point of this scanner was to convert negative images in to a positive image. Was I mistaken?
A: Make sure that you have selected Negative under film type before you scan. See the picture below.

Also, when scanning make sure that the color depth is set one 24 and the DPI is set on 1800. This should convert the negatives to positives once it is transferred in to your computer.

Q: How come every time I try to acquire an image, I keep getting “Failed to get image data”. What does this mean? I can see the image in the live view but that’s as far as I can get. What should I do?
A: First try to use a different USB port. If this does not work, try these steps.

  1. Plug the scanner in to a 2.0 USB port.
  2. Open up Control Panel.
  3. Go in to System. (Make sure you are in Classic View.)
  4. Once you are in System click on the Hardware tab at the top.
  5. Click on Device Manager.
  6. Look for Imaging Devices.
  7. Make sure there is OVT Scanner visible under Imaging Devices.

If you do not see OVT Scanner under Imaging Devices, you will have to manually add the hardware. To do so please follow these directions:

  1. Plug the scanner in to a 2.0 USB port.
  2. Open up Control Panel.
  3. Look for Hardware.
Follow the onscreen directions.
