Using the Photo Converter:

Q: I have loaded the software and the driver on to my computer but every time I
click on the snapshot button, nothing happens. What am I doing wrong?

A: First make sure that you have all the necessary software downloaded on to your
computer. Go to Control Panel and then go in to Add of Remove Programs. Make sure
you have ArcSoft PhotoImpressions 6 and CRS Photo Scanner on your programs list. If
you have both of those programs on your computer, close out of the Add or Remove
Programs window. Then follow these steps:

1. After you have loaded the driver and the software, you will have to plug the
converter in to your computer and then open up the PhotoImpressions 6 icon
from your desktop.
2. Once that is open, you should be able to see “Get Photos” on the upper left hand
corner.
3. Click on that and you will select “Acquire from Photo Scanner”.
4. Once you get the “Acquire from Scanner” window you will select “CRS Photo
Scanner”.

Then you choose where you would like to save the pictures if you would like
them to automatically go in to you My Pictures folder. Click on the folder to the right to
select which folder you would like the pictures to transfer to.

After you have selected where you would like your pictures to transfer to, select the
photo size that you are going to be converting.

5. Now click on Acquire.
6. Once you get the “CRS Photo Scanner” window, you will put in a mounted
photograph in to the tray slot. You will see it on the “Live View” window.
7. Click on “Snapshot” or press the button on the front of the photo converter. You
will see the same picture on the right side and also at the top where it looks like a
film strip.
8. Then click on “Transfer” and the pictures will be transferred directly to your “My
Pictures” folder or the folder which you designated.
USB connection problems:

Q: How come every time I plug the photo converter in to the computer I get a USB
not recognized message? I have all the software loaded on to the computer.

A: Make sure that you are using 2.0 USB ports. To check if your computer is running on
2.0 USB ports, please follow these steps:

1. Go to Control Panel.
2. Look for System. (If you are in category view you will have to switch to classic
view.)
3. Open System.
4. Look for the Hardware tab at the top of the window, click on Hardware.
5. Click on Device Manager.
6. Look for Universal Serial Bus Controllers.
7. Expand that so that you are able to see the list of all the USB ports.
8. Look for anything that says either “enhanced”, or “USB 2”. If you see any of the
mentioned words, this means that your computer has a 2.0 USB port. (See the
picture below.)

This is most likely why you are getting the error message. If you do not have 2.0 USB
ports, you would have to find out the make and model of your computer and purchase
an add in card that will be compatible with your computer for USB 2.0. This should take
care of the USB not recognized message.

Q: When I plug the film converter in to a USB port, the PWR light does not light up
on the converter. The USB port on my computer is working. What am I doing
wrong?

A: If this is happening, you may have a defective unit. This may be due to an internal
wiring problem.

Q: Every time I turn off the computer and then turn it on it fails to boot and load.
The computer just freezes up and I have to do a hard shut off of the computer by
pressing the on/off button on the computer. I then have to unplug the photo
converter and then plug the unit back in to have the computer load up completely
and correctly and all the programs work fine. Why is this happening? Is it a
software problem?

A: This is not a software problem. Make sure that when the photo converter is not in
use, detach it from your computer. This is because the unit does not have an on or off
button, so it is continually on while your computer is on and the converter is plugged in.
This may be why the unit is freezing your computer. Make sure to unplug the film
converter from your computer when it is not in use. Only plug the converter in to the
computer when your computer is fully booted and you are ready to convert
photographs.

Q: The software loaded okay and the driver installed correctly. I get the Found
New Hardware Wizard, but while loading the hardware, I get a Code 10 error. What
can I do about this?

A: This might be due to the type of computer that you are using. If you are using a
desktop computer and are getting this error message, you will want to uninstall the
software and driver and reinstall. Instead of installing the driver and the software with
the photo converter unplugged, connect the converter to your computer and then install
the driver and the software. Then reboot your computer with the unit still connected. If
you are using a laptop computer and are getting this error message, it is due a power
problem and the driver will not work correctly on your laptop computer. This is because
the unit is very power sensitive.

Q: I know I have 2.0 USB ports and I’m plugging it in to the correct port, but it
never comes up with the Found New Hardware Wizard. What am I doing wrong?

A: You may have to re-synch your photo converter to your computer.

1. Go to Control Panel.
2. Look for System. (If you are in category view you will have to switch to classic
view.
3. Open System.
4. Look for the Hardware tab at the top of the window, click on Hardware.
5. Click on Device Manager.
6. Look for Universal Serial Bus Controllers.
7. Expand that so that you are able to see the list of all USB ports.
8. If there is a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark next to CRS Photo Scanner
or Unrecognized device, you will have to disconnect the photo converter from
your computer.
9. Once disconnected, you will have to uninstall the driver and the software and
reinstall it.
10. Then the Found New Hardware Wizard should come up.
If the Wizard does not come up automatically you may have to manually add the
hardware. Please follow the steps below:
1. Connect the film converter to your computer.
2. Go to Control Panel.
3. Open Add Hardware.
4. Click on Next (without the installation disk in the drive).
5. Select “Yes, I have already connected the hardware” option, then click Next.
6. It will show a list of installed hardware.
7. Look for CRS Photo Scanner and highlight it.
8. Then click Next to see if it says “Device is working properly”.
If so, you are ready to start converting photographs.

Q: I have a 2.0 USB port and I have synched up the hardware with the computer.
I’m able to see the live view box but when I put a photograph in the converter, I
can only see 1” of the photo and the rest are colored lines. Is there something
wrong with my photo converter?

A: This seems like an unstable power output issue. Please try using a different USB on
your computer. This is because this unit is very power sensitive. It is picking up
whatever power is coming out of the USB port on your computer. If you are using an
add in card with your computer, you may want to try and make sure you do not have
anything else plugged in to the add in card.
ArcSoft PhotoImpressions 6 issues:

Q: I’m doing everything correctly, I followed all of the steps to load the software
and the driver. I get to the “Live View” and I am able to see the photograph that I
put in, but every time I click on Snapshot or press the button on the front of the
unit, nothing happens. What should I do?

A: This may be a hardware issue. If possible, try using the photo converter on a different
computer to see if you achieve the same results. This is to determine if it is a software
or hardware problem. If you find that it works on a different computer but not on your
own, it may be that it is not compatible with your computer. If it is doing the same thing
on a different computer, please contact the retailer where you purchased it from for an
exchange.

Q: Why does it take such a long time for me to transfer the images to my
computer? Is it normal to take about 4-5 minutes for each transferring process?
Is there something wrong with my photo converter?

A: The only thing that the converter does is the snapshot part of the process. The
transferring part depends on your computer. Make sure you disable your anti-virus
program, this may make the transferring process a little quicker. Before you disable any
anti-virus programs, make sure to disconnect from the internet first. Also, this may be
due to the amount of RAM that you have in your computer. You should have at least
512MB of RAM. You also need Pentium 4 processor with a speed of 1.8 GHZ and
800MB of free space in your hard disk to have the program run as it is intended. To
check this, you will have to open Control Panel, then System, and check under the
general tab.

Q: How come every time I try to acquire an image, I keep getting “Failed to get
image data”. What does this mean? I can see the image in the live view but that is
as far as I can get. What should I do?

A: One thing to try is to use a different USB port on your computer. Another reason you
may be getting this message is because the folder that you are transferring your
pictures to is too full. You may want to redirect the location that your pictures are being
transferred to. Please see the picture below for further reference:

Or you should try to disable any anti-virus programs that you have running in the
background and disconnect any scanners that you have connected to the computer.

Q: Every time I try to open up PhotoImpressions 6 from my desktop, it goes on
and then gives me an error “PhotoImpressions has encountered a problem and
must close” and then closes the whole program. What do I do to fix this
problem?

A: You may want to try and move the pictures that are in your My Pictures and then try
to open up your PhotoImpressions 6. You might have some files in your My Pictures
folder that PhotoImpressions 6 is not able to open so it sees it as a corrupt file. Once
any files that are not either JPEG or TIF files are removed, you should not get that error
message anymore.

Q: I’m confused, when should I use the “Calibrate” function?
A: The calibrate function is used to adjust the automatic white balance and the
automatic exposure of the film converter. You should calibrate right before you start
converting photographs to ensure the best white balance and exposure control.

Q: My converted photos are coming out overexposed. Is there something that I’m
doing wrong?

A: This happens because inside of the photo converter there is a camera sensor that is
taking a picture of the photograph you are converting. Therefore, the finished converted
photograph will not be an exact replica of the original. If there is a lot of color contrast in
the photo, for example, a dark background and a lighter figure that can cause
overexposure as well. Instead of letting the picture sit in the photo converter for a long
period of time, try to click snapshot right when the photo comes in to view in the live
view window. This will give the photo converter less time to keep adjusting the exposure
value.

Q: Does this photo converter work with Macintosh computers? Will it work on a
Macintosh computer running on Windows XP or Windows Vista parallels?

A: We are sorry to inform you that this photo converter is only compatible with a PC that
is running either Windows XP or Windows Vista. It will not work on a Macintosh
computer running on parallels. There are no future plans to develop a driver that will be
compatible with Macintosh computers.
ArcSoft PhotoImpressions 6 issues:

Q: How do I completely uninstall PhotoImpressions 6 on my computer?

A: After uninstalling the PhotoImpressions 6 and driver from your computer you may still
have some associated files in your systems folders. To completely uninstall the driver
and the PhotoImpressions 6 program from your computer please follow these steps:

1. Make sure you are disconnected from the internet and all anti-virus programs
and firewalls are disabled.
2. Go to My Computer from the Start menu.
3. Open up Local Disk (C:).
4. Open the Windows folder.
5. Look for the System 32 folder and open.
6. Look for and delete “ovtFBoot.dll, ext2800.ax, and EXT2800.DLL.
7. Once these three files are completely deleted from your computer you are ready
to reinstall the driver and the software.
